Thursday 17th July – no training at Bridge End

It’s looking like the majority of the club coaches are not going to be available this Thursday night so we’re going to have to cancel. While this is a blow, don’t forget that this is our weekend based at Voxter (just north of Brae) and we’re hoping to have some really good trips for everyone. Get in touch if you want more details.

Sea Kayaking will be represented when the Queen’s baton visits Shetland!

Mavis Robertson, a long-standing member of the Club and until recently our lead coach, will be doing her leg of the relay about 10.30am just south of the “Tesco” roundabout to the end of South Lochside!

In her own words
“… a cheering crowd would be wonderful (!) or one or two individuals with a bouyancy aid and a paddle or helmet would be fun…”

If you’re in the area please feel free to join the crowd and cheer her on 🙂

Tiderace kayaks available to try at Shetland Symposium

Roddy McDowell of Kayak Bute is paddling this year at the symposium.  As the Scottish Tiderace dealer he’s offering to bring up Tiderace Xcites, Xplores, Xtras, Xcapes and the plastic Vortex up with him! Check out Kayak Bute for details of these lovely boats! http://www.kayakbute.co.uk/

29th May – Thursday night coaching and trip

With visiting paddlers plus all the beginners in flat calm conditions, a trip round Hous was quickly arranged for the majority and away they went for what was a lovely paddle! Visibility wasn’t great but it all added to the experience of the first trip for beginners this year.

A second group were also out in a canoe, working on two star skills and enjoying the evening on the water.

Many thanks to everyone for what was a fun night.

Training Bridge End this Thursday will include rescues and a bit of incident management. Anyone planning on coming on trips – come along and practice

Angus is talking about this week’s session including rescues, contact tows and general incident management. What we cover will depend on who turns up and can be as advanced as people want. If you’re planning on going on trips this should be a good session to attend. Expect to get wet so bring dry clothes and a warm drink, and anyone that has a spare dry suit will be most welcome!

The first Thursday Nights beginners sessions of the season

2014 beginners session 15th May

The 2014 Thursday night sessions kicked off on 15th May.

A good turnout at Bridge End with a variety of experience across the twenty paddlers on the water, the blustery conditions challenged this year’s beginners and got the more experienced techniques dusted off. Nothing quite like having to demonstrate technique to others to concentrate the mind!

Many thanks to Craig, Angus, Iain D, and Catriona for coaching and Yolanda, Iwan and Ben for assisting.

Club members that have 1* and above – If you are looking to brush up on skills before getting out on trips, feel free to come along over this next few Thursday nights. Otherwise just speak to Rachel and get paddling as there’s plenty of trips going on for all levels of paddlers.

Symposium – places now capped.

Last few places being held for local paddlers, waiting list now in operation. Email if you want name added to list.

2014 Membership forms now available

Form now available, please complete and get it back to Craig and Sheryl. Return by 1st May to ensure you’re classed as a current member, to be guaranteed texts and emails from the club about events, and to borrow gear and attend club trips! If you miss the deadline and want to paddle don’t worry. Contact Craig by email in advance of the trip, bring the membership form and payment along with with you and give it to the trip leader.  This is an insurance requirement for club activities.

Good start to the pool sessions

Thursday night saw thirteen paddlers in the pool, a great start to this run of five sessions before the beginners training. Nice to see a full pool! Thanks go to Angus for bringing the boats.

If you fancy giving paddling a try, you can now turn up and have a free session. There will be a committee member or delegated individual at the entrance to the pool changing area.

Participants group set up for 2014 Symposium on Facebook plus new car share page

We’ve just added a facebook group for participants in this year’s symposium. Check it out for details of informal paddles in the run up to the symposium and for the week between the Symposium and Voxter. Any formal trips will of course be mentioned here as well! There’s also a new car share page for participants coming from south.
