Voxter: The post-Shetsymp2012 weekend!

Voxter forms available here!

Friday, 3 August 2012 at 18:00 until Monday, 6 August 2012 at 09:00

The Shetland Canoe Club weekend of informal trips and outings for all of it’s members and any visitors to the Isles. It’s very relaxed and informal, a chance to explore with the club. Previous years have seen folks spend the week after the symposium heading out on their own and with small groups, then come together for a few days of sociableness!

It’s going to be at the Voxter Outdoor Centre, Brae, Shetland

Hopefully this link will work first time…!

Shetland Sea Kayak Symposium 2012

Symposium booking form 2012 now available here!

(just click on the text above)

Planning for this, our Seventh Symposium, is well under-way and it’s time to get those application forms filled out and back to us.

Doors open for registration at Bridge End on the morning of Friday 27th July –  there’s nothing formal arranged through the day (at the moment) but plenty going on, hopefully a bit of a get together Friday night (we’ve got the local hall booked!)  before the symposium kicks off properly on Saturday 28th. Things will be pretty busy through the rest of the weekend and once folks are off the water we’re going to have an evening of quizzes, slide shows and talks on Saturday night after the meal,  Sunday will be a less formal evening to kick back after another full day of paddling with those staying on. Monday 30th July we’ll officially close down, clean up and head away to see what we can get up to before our Voxter paddle meet the following weekend!

If you’re needing transport to/ from ferries over the symposium let us know, we’re happy to help.

Coming up with someone that doesn’t paddle? We won’t be running separate events for them but there’s plenty to do in Shetland.

Please not that entries are caped at 50 (paddlers, not age) and the age limit for paddlers is 16. First come, first served.

We’ll get the contributors profiles uploaded over the next few days, and you can always sneak a look at the  Shetland Sea Kayak Symposium 2012 Facebook Page for more ‘live’ details!

Wanting to ask a question? We’ll respond to a post on our Facebook page, or you can email us at:      shetsymp2012@gmail.com

Congratulations to those who did their FRST Training on the 21st

Any questions e-mail Mave.

FRST Training day 21st January 2012

One week till the next FSRT day

The next day for completing Foundation Rescue and Safety Training is Saturday 21 January. Martin Rickard can assess only 6 people but he is happy to have more people come along and take part. The training begins at 9am at Bridge End and will finish by about 4.

Part of the training will be indoors but for the outdoor part a dry suit and hood are recommended. If you have a helmet or towline bring it along and remember lunch and a towel. Hot showers available.

To obtain a certificate from the SCA you need to pay £5 admin charge, £10 for non members. Give that to Martin on the day and he will do the paper work.

Winter Pool Sessions start on 2nd Feb again

Wnter Pool  Sessions start again on the 2nd February at the clickimin.  So if any of you guys have put the odd gram or oz (depending on your currency ) on over the festive season nows your chance to get that six pack back into shape.

Usual time 8.00 p.m. on thursdays.

Congratulations!

Well done to the 5 brave souls who took part in the Foundation Safety and Rescue Training day on Sunday. They have taken the first step towards becoming Level 1 Coaches.

The day was cold but at least the gales eased for the occasion. A large part of the training was indoors and the time on and in the water was carefully monitored by Martin so that no one got too cold. They must have enjoyed it as some are thinking of going along to sit in on the next training day!

The Next FSRT Training Day

Martin is willing to run another FSRT day soon for the 3 people who could not be fitted in on Sunday. There are spaces available if you would like to take part. You can complete this training even if you do not want to go on to do the rest of the Level 1 Coach course.

Level 1 Coach

Is there anyone out there who would like to do the Level 1 Coach training but has not got round to saying so yet? Remember any one with Two Star can apply. Let Mave know at mavis.robertson@hotmail.co.uk  as soon as possible to secure a place. We can then arrange the next FSRT day at a time to suit you.

Thursday Sessions Finished

Just a quick note to remind folks that the Thursday night pool sessions are finished for 2011. Sessions in 2012 will be publicised in due course. Thanks

Completing Foundation Rescue and Safety Training (FRST)

Most Level 1 Coach courses are offered on a residential basis over 5 days and the first day is for completing the FSRT certificate. Since we have Martin Rickard here who is qualified to assess it we can manage to run the course over 4 action-packed days!

For those who have not already done the FRST day Martin Rickard will be providing a training day very soon
