Shetland Canoe Club

News, events, trips and info for sea kayaking and canoeing in Shetland

Four Star Leaders

Shetland Canoe Club coaches Ian Cummings, Arthur Robertson and Angus Nicol all achieved their new 4-Star Leadership Awards. Well done to them all and thanks to the “guinea pigs”they accompanied on the assessment trips, Yolande, Katrina and Deborah, and to the  the trainers/assessors Roy Henderson and Martin Rickard.

Angus on the Nibon trip

The assessment trips took some spectacular coastline, from Nibon to the Drongs off Eshaness and the second day took in the ever-amazing coast of Muckle Roe. Both trips took place in relatively challenging conditions and the club leaders were asked to perform rescue manoeuvres and safety exercises in awkward condtions to justify the title of a 4-Star Leader.

New date available from Dave & Julie for those interested that have not yet registered.

Voar Redd Up

Hi Guys

Change of venue for the week-end as the weather is not on our side for paddling.

SUNDAY 18th: Brighter and colder with showers – wintry at times – and falling as snow on higher ground. Fresh or strong NW to N’ly winds, these easing and backing W or SW’ly overnight.
Sea state – Moderate or rough, with a 2 to 4 metre W’ly swell.

Instead we are doing our bit shore side. Bring warm clothing and dress for the cold and poss snowy showers. Do not forget your lunch and anything else you require. Julie will be bringing the bags, gloves etc.  Do not forget cameras so we can take piccies and hopefully get one in the paper and also some for the web site to show our visitors how we clean things up here. They may take the hint and do it south.

We will meet at Beth & Ian’s at 11.00 a.m. . If you are not sure where this is wait by the Scalloway Marina by the college .They are not far from there and if any of us see you we can let you know where to go.

Navigation Training

Anyone interested in doing a coastal navigation course please let Dave
Phillips know. The course will cover the BCU Coastal Navigation and Tidal
Planning syllabus. At the moment there will be no official qualification as
such, however, you will learn about; tides, maps and charts, weather, trip
planning and the use of plotting instruments. The course will be about 8
hours long and on a Saturday. The cost will be £7.50 and this will go to the
overheads of running the course.

Voar Redd Up

Hi Guys

At the AGM it was decided that we would do our main Voar Redd Up event at Papa. (not Papa Stour or Papa Little) . This requires the club to go by Kayak and our support crew will be Ian in his boat , and maybe others who knows, who has kindly offered to take the bags back to Scalloway marina for the Amenity trust to collect. We will also be tidying up the marina as usual as it is our home patch.

If anyone is interested and would like to book a club kayak for the event then let me know as numbers will be limited.

For those who have their own kayak let me know if you are coming as the start point will be decided on nearer the time and we would not want to leave you behind.

All this is subject to the weather and no one has control over that. Not even me. Or Beth.

So fingers crossed for a good day.

Check the link – Ordnance Survey maps – and test your knowledge to see if you can find it. It will be good practice for you when you are deciding which trip to host this year. If you need a grid reference please ask. We have been there several times on Tuesday night trips in the past. Do not cheat and ask Beth & Ian.

Cheers

Julie

New website

The new club website was launched at a regular committee meeting on 8th March 2010. The content will now be brought fully up to date and club members will be informed about it and hopefully before long we’ll have some reports from trips and training sessions to add to it. More news on this years beginners training will follow soon. Any member with photos they’d like to add to the gallery can do so through the site, just use the contact form.

AGM 25th March 2010

The club will be holding it’s AGM at the Isleburgh Centre  on the 25th March at 7.00 p.m. Room 10.  All welcome, even if you are not currently a member but may be  thinking of joining, please come along.

Shetland Symposium

Sorry for the lack of information to date but still busy trying to organise contributors and caterers, not an easy job, so I am reluctant to give out too much information at present in case I have to make changes . We would also like to keep costs as near to 2008 as possible as we are aware of the expense of travelling up to Shetland and do not want to make the whole event too costly for you all. I am confident of a good line up for you as the contributors are always keen to come to Shetland and we do have on offer amazing places to kayak and the wildlife and scenery is something else
