Thursday 25 – Evening trip round Lerwick Harbour

A great evening for a paddle saw 22 people on the water, a good mix of experienced paddlers and beginners.

Starting at the Bod of Gremistra, we went straight cross to Bressay and turning south headed to the ferry terminal. After a bit of a rest while a huge tug headed through the harbour, it was time to head across to the old manse and along to the Knab. The large cave with window just had to be visited before rounding the Knab and rock-hopping into Brewick, ending with a gentle paddle to the slip next to Fjara.

I can’t sum it up any better than Mike’s comment on facebook “…a late night but a good night in excellent company…”

Many thanks to Mat and Mike for working with the trailers, Craig for sorting shuttles, Debs and the other experienced paddlers for supervising, everyone for turning out and being an easy group to take out on the water!

Good start to the pool sessions

Thursday night saw thirteen paddlers in the pool, a great start to this run of five sessions before the beginners training. Nice to see a full pool! Thanks go to Angus for bringing the boats.

If you fancy giving paddling a try, you can now turn up and have a free session. There will be a committee member or delegated individual at the entrance to the pool changing area.

Committee Meeting Islesburgh 7pm Friday 28th Feb

First committee meeting for 2014. If you’re interested in shaping what’s going to happen throughout this year, let one of the committee know and turn up to discuss.

Club trips – why not volunteer to help organise!

We all want trips to happen, be well run and enjoyable. However, it’s a lot of work for one person to take on, especially when they don’t always need to.

Every trip needs a trip leader, but it doesn’t mean the leader needs to organise it all.  Often they have all their own boats and gear, so everything about organising the preferred boats/ paddles/ spraydecks/ buoyancy aids  and assorted kit onto trailers, arranging lifts and so on is really being done for you at a the cost of the trip leader’s time.

You can help. You don’t need to be 4* to start organising a trip, you just need to have an idea for a paddle you’d like to do and be prepared to put a little of your own time in to make it happen.

If you’re interested let one of the Committee know.

The other thing about trips – it depends on the weather and who’s available. Use the forum to keep up with possible trips, make suggestions for locations, get involved.

21st June 2013 Simmer Dim Paddle, south end Muckle Roe

Grabbing a quick weather window, a group of five of us (Bryan, Jim, Fiona and Steve plus myself) took the opportunity for a few hours paddling. Swell forecast wasn’t great and some of us weren’t wanting too late a night, so a shortish paddle in a relatively sheltered area was in order! Unfortunately the swell was in completely the wrong direction for the really good caves on the Northwest side of Muckle Roe, so thought we’d give the south side a go. Great evening despite not being able to go into the best caves on the south side either. Good way to spend the Simmer Dim.

This trip was organised through the club forum and was open to all club members.

Tuesday 28th May – 1* and over sessions, session 2.

This is the second session for anyone who’s paddled before and wants to get out on the water. Meet at Bridge End again, usual aim of being on the water at 7pm sharp so be there a good bit before that, and don’t forget hot drink/ spare clothes etc. We may not be going in at Bridge End so it’s really important to check what’s going on with a Coach as soon as you arrive!

Don’t worry if you didn’t make it last week and are worried that you’ll be too rusty, come along and speak to someone and we’ll ease you back out onto the water. And if you’re wanting to start preparing for 2* just speak to a coach and we’ll sort that too.

These sessions are for you, the coaches are there to support you.

(…Please remember  membership needs to be sorted before you get kitted out…)
