News, events, trips and info for sea kayaking and canoeing in Shetland

3 star open canoe training 20/21st August

We have a 3* open canoe assessor coming to Shetland on 20th and 21st August. There are spaces available for members of the Shetland Canoe Club to undertake their 3* open canoe assessment with him.
If you are interested in attempting your 3* open canoe assessment please e-mail Rosalind. Open canoe training will have to be undertaken before the assessment. Weather permitting this may take place with the canoe club.
If you are unsure if you are at 3* ability please ask a club coach the next time you are out paddling and they will be able to give you advice.
The 3* open canoe pre-requisites are:
At least 3 journeys in an open canoe of approx. 3 hours
And either hold a 2* BCU award or have undertaken a 3 hour paddle in another discipline (so a paddle trip in a kayak).
As said earlier, to register your interest please reply to this e-mail as soon as possible.
Please note this is an opportunity to obtain 3* open canoe, not 3* sea kayak.

If you are interested please contact Rosalind at rnicol45@yahoo.co.uk

Weisdale to Strom, 07/05/2016 Shetland Canoe Club

The group of 11 went paddling from just passed the school at Weisdale  to Strom bridge, head of Stromness Voe.
On the first, downwind leg it was nice being out on the water, a relaxed paddle making good headway with the wind to our backs. We passed Flota and Hoy, names more often associated with our neighbouring islands but without the major tidal streams.
We paused briefly at North Havra but the beaches didn’t look good for landing so headed round into Stromness Voe for a break.
The second leg proved to be upwind with little lee to catch a rest, and the wind picked up a bit so all had an opportunity to work on efficient forward paddling!
As the water from Strom Loch was in full flow, there was no alternative but for some to play (and fall in) in the fast moving water while others started the portage back to the cars.
Many thanks to Rachel and Christine for organising a great little trip.

We’re moving!

Shetland Canoe Club Beginners Sessions start 18 April 2016

Starts Monday 18th April, 25th April, 2nd May, 9th May
If you’ve never kayaked and thought you’d like to give it a go, this is a good way to learn some of the basics before you get out onto the sea.
Each week we’ll spend just under an hour looking at safety, equipment and general paddling do’s and don’ts before heading into the pool. At the end of the four weeks you’ll be ready to head outdoors on the sea to put some of what we’ve been doing into practice before getting going with trips.
You need to be able to swim and be over 13, all children under 16 need to be accompanied by an adult.
Meet 7:15pm at Bowlers bar for the dry bit. There will be time to get changed before we go into the pool at 8:30pm. Please bring your completed enrolment form with you.
