As it was such a nice night, decision made to head out to Gletness. Leaving with one of the biggest group trips of the year, working on forward paddling and staying upright was order of the day. A quick five minute break on the beach was had at Gletness after an hour paddling, then out to South Isle and across to North Isle to try and pass through the arch. Unfortunately the tide was too low, but a good twenty minutes was spent checking out the nooks and crannies of North Isle. When we got back at 10pm everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves, even if they were a wee bit tired after their first real trip
We had two day trips based in the north mainland that weekend. Top two pictures Saturday, lower two Sunday
Saturday saw a small group of four head from Urafirth to Mavis Grind. Excellent paddling conditions at the start let us into caves and inlets, then the breeze and the swell from the west gave a bit of a challenge between Nibon and Egilsay. Still, a great day to be out on the water! Many thanks to Rachel for organising
Sunday saw a slightly larger group head up to Ronas Voe in very benign conditions, enjoying threading in and out of the stacks and caves on both out and back legs. And we also came across a group of coasteers, standing on top of a pinnacle just as we rounded the corner. Many thanks to Rachel for organising and leading

If you’ve never kayaked and thought you’d like to give it a go, this is a good way to learn some of the basics before you get out onto the sea.
Each week we’ll spend just under an hour looking at safety, equipment and general paddling do’s and don’ts before heading into the pool. At the end of the four weeks you’ll be ready to head outdoors on the sea to put some of what we’ve been doing into practice before getting going with trips.
You need to be able to swim and be over 13, all children under 16 need to be accompanied by an adult.
Meet 7:15pm at Bowlers bar for the dry bit. There will be time to get changed before we go into the pool at 8:30pm. Please bring your completed enrolment form with you.
Numbers are looking good, in the region of 40 already booked and the accommodation at Bridge End is now full. We’re going to have to restrict entries now, please email us at shetlandsymposium@gmail.com and we will confirm whether we can manage to fit you in.
Many thanks
